Stories from the Fitting Room – Janice’s Bra Story

JaniceJanice, who is in her 50’s and a Sacramento schoolteacher, came to see us wearing a size 36A bra.  Her feeling was that the cups for the 36A’s seemed too large and also that the band tended to ride up when she moved around, which was not the kind of thing she wanted to happen while standing in front of 20 kids!

“I have never had a bra that really fit me, that felt comfortable, and which I liked to wear. My bras usually ride up when I move or lift my arms over my head. You know what I came up with as my bra solution?” Janice asked while being measured.  “I have been wearing 2 bras on top of each other to make sure my bras stay in place, but of course this doesn’t make me feel very attractive.”

Janice read a New York Times article where Lula Lu was mentioned and she decided to give bra shopping another try. Her goals for her visit were to get measured and find some well-fitting and, most importantly, comfortable non-underwire T-shirt bras that would make her feel both comfortable and feminine.

It feels so nice, I could start crying.”  And, then, she started crying. After that, she asked to try on more sexy and feminine styles, from which she chose a lace cami and a chemise that fit her beautifully.

Is there a Perfect Small Bra that Fits Everybody?

We often get asked both from our store and web customers whether there is a “magic bullet” bra for small busts that fits everyone and that everyone loves. Of course, we also wish this kind of bra existed because it would make shopping for bras so much easier, not to mention lightening fast! However, as with anything, everyone has their own body type and personal preferences regarding the look and shape of a bra.

Having said that, we do have a style that many, but of course not all, customers have gravitated towards and it is the Lula Lu Petites Delilah Wireless Bra (LUL05). The Delilah is a lightly padded, underwire free T-shirt bra that provides a nice shape without adding much volume. Sports Bra Essentials

Sports bras are available in a wide variety: expensive or low-priced, no-name or designer brands, in plain white for underneath or in in bright neon colors to be worn as tops. But even with a wide range of top sports bras to choose from, over 50% of all women who exercise regularly don’t wear one when working out. Especially small busted women don’t know if they really need a sports bra for support.

But, yes, wearing a supportive sports bra is essential, no matter if you are small or big busted. One reason to wear a sports bra is to prevent uncomfortable and sometimes even painful bouncing. The most compelling argument to wear a sports bra, though?  Not wearing a supportive and properly fitting sports bra during exercise can lead to permanent breast damage, whether you’ve experienced pain or not, and even if your breasts are very small.

How can the damage occur? 

Because breasts are made of mostly mammary glands and fatty tissue and supported by ligaments and skin, they suffer from a lack of support during exercise. Once the ligaments and skin are stretched, there’s really no way to “unstretch” them short of surgery.

Clearly, wearing a sports bra is a good idea, but not all sports bras are created equal and not all of them offer the same type of support. A scientific study performed by Joanna Scurr, a professor of biomechanics at the University of Portsmouth in England, showed that breasts move in three dimensions during physical activity.

1) Up and down

2) Side to side

3) In and out

So, finding a bra that limits motion in all directions provides the most protection from sagging and pain.

What type of sports bra is best?

There are two basic ways that sports bras reduce breast movement during exercise: encapsulation and compression.

Encapsulation bras surround each breast individually much like an everyday bra. Their individual cups offer support for women wearing bigger cups.

Compression sports bras reduce the movement of the breasts by pulling them close to the body (compressing them). They are the best choice for smaller chested women.  Compression sports bras also come with cups and padding to give a little extra boost and shape, like the Shock AbsorberLevel 2 Pump Sports Bra that our Lula Lu customers love.

And the fit?

A well fitting sports bra should fit snuggly under your breasts without being uncomfortably tight. Your breasts should fit entirely inside but there shouldn’t be any fabric bulges either. The shoulder straps should not dig into your shoulders. Like any bra, the primary support comes from the band, not the straps.

Something else to consider?

Beyond support, there are a few other things to look for in a sports bra. First of all, your sports bra should be comfortable. If you want to take your sports bra off screaming after wearing it for 2 minutes in the dressing room, look for another size or style until you find a comfortable one. Also, make sure your sports bra is made of moisture-wicking fabric, such as Lycra, to keep sweat from getting the bra wet and to prevent chafing problems.

Now you are ready for your favorite workout, whether it is running, cycling, kickboxing or playing tennis!

To Bralette or Not to Bralette

First of all, we have no idea why there are two spellings for “bralette” (the other is “bralet”) but either works for what we’re talking about!  And, we include some soft cup bras, meaning bras with hook/eyes but mainly ones with no foam cups, in this discussion as well.   Generally,  bralettes have no hook/eye and must be be pulled over the head.  And, we do our best to select bralettes that will fit 32AAA – 38AA cups.

We often have women asking us why anyone would bother to wear bralettes because usually they are see through, lacey, flattening or a combination of all these and they just seem impractical for daily wear.  Well, from talking to customers who are bralette fans (and from our own personal experience), there is definitely some truth to the fact that bralettes do not offer as much coverage or shaping as molded cup bras BUT they do offer their own set of benefits.

One such benefit is comfort.  Most bralettes have no underwire, usually have stretchy bands and can do double time as a camisole top if you don’t feel like wearing one (or don’t feel like wearing a bra)!  For example, the Lula Lu Petites Jaylyn Bralette would make a good companion to any V-neck top or sweater any time or if you just feel like layering!

Going Strapless!

Whether you’re wearing a cocktail dress, wedding gown or sexy party attire, these are all outfits that often look best when worn with a strapless bra.  We all know that finding a well-fitting strapless bra can sometimes be more challenging than finding that special dress and the matching pair of shoes!  To make shopping for a petite strapless bra a fun experience, Lula Lu offers some great strapless options.

The Lula Petites Strapless has light padding for AA and A cups and removable cookies for AAA cups.  The Lula Lu Strapless bra can be worn strapless, regular, criss-cross or halter.
